Washington D.C. - Senate leaders honored U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., for the third time during his eight years serving as one of Wyoming's senators when they presented him with the Golden Gavel award recently.
Senators that preside over the Senate for 100 hours during the Congress are presented the award by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the Majority Leader.
Enzi was the first in his class to earn the award in 1997 when he presided over debate in the 105th Congress. No one in the senate had presided more than Enzi and no one in the Republican Party had earned more hours of presiding time so quickly in the history of the legislative body. Enzi earned his second Golden Gavel award in 2000.
"Most of the time senators and staff monitor debate on the floor by watching TV in their offices, but there's something to actually being there," Enzi said. "I knew early on that learning the intricacies of senate rules and parliamentary tactics would be to our advantage. This is another benefit to presiding in addition to following debate on the issues first hand."
