Amendment to Increase the Size of the Army by 20,000 Troops Approved
The joint House of Representative/Senate Conference Report on the
Defense Authorization bill contains an amendment by U.S. Senators
Jack Reed (D-RI) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE) to increase the authorized
troop strength (officially known as end-strength) of the Army by
20,000 troops.

Statement Regarding the Shortage
of Flu Vaccine
The Department of Health and Human
Services’ (HHS) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
announced today that the Chiron Corporation, slated to supply 50 million
of the CDC’s 100 million doses of flu vaccine, will not supply
the vaccine to the United States this flu season causing a critical
shortage of vaccine in America.

Pressure from Reed, Bush Administration Announces Plan to Reject Proposal
to Devalue Housing Vouchers
Housing and Urban and Development
(HUD) Assistant Secretary Dennis Shea notified the office of Senator
Jack Reed (D-RI) of the Bush Administration’s plans to reverse
course and reject a proposal that would have slashed the amount seniors
and working families received from Section 8 housing vouchers. The
new plan will not be finalized until October 1st.

Program Provides Millions to Help Rhode Island Fight Lead Poisoning
Senator Reed announced today that
Rhode Island will receive over $7.5 million in Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) funds to eliminate the dangers of lead paint hazards in Rhode
Island homes. $3.9
million of the total is the direct result of a program Reed created
in 2003 to fight lead poisoning in communities with the highest rates
of lead poisoning in children.

Reed and Collins Seek Additional Funding to Assist Low Income Families
with Energy Costs
Co-Chairs of the
Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and
Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) are again urging their colleagues to provide
additional funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
(LIHEAP). LIHEAP offers critical assistance to seniors and low-income
families who are unable to otherwise afford soaring energy prices.

Approves Amendment Requesting Coordination on LNG Reports
The United States
Senate has approved an amendment by Senator Reed to require the
Department of Homeland Security to provide a report to Congress
on integrating the United States Coast Guard's water traffic, security
and safety reviews of the placement of a liquid natural gas (LNG)
terminal with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC)
environmental and long-term energy distribution strategies for LNG
terminals.

Three years ago
