Armed Services Committee

The Armed Services Committee provides oversight and support on issues relating to the military and military personnel.

Senator Nelson is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Personnel and serves on the Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support and the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces.

The Armed Servies Committee has jurisdiction in the areas of:

1. Aeronautical and space activities peculiar to or primarily associated with the development of weapons systems or military operations
2. The common defense
3. The Department of Defense
4. The Department of the Army
5. The Department of the Navy
6. The Department of the Air Force
7. Maintenance and operation of the Panama Canal
8. Administration, Sanitation, and Government of the Canal Zone
9. Military research and development
10. National security aspects of nuclear energy
11. Naval petroleum reserves (except those in Alaska)
12. Pay, promotion, retirement, and other benefits and privileges of members of the Armed Forces, including overseas education of civilian and military dependents
13. Selective service system
14. Strategic and critical materials necessary for the common defense.
