Survey Data Info Data Files SAS Resources A word about file formats: The BRFSS Survey Data are available in several different file formats. Each type available from this page is described below. Rich Text Format File (RTF). This format contains plain text and allows for basic formatting. Use a word processor to view and edit these files. Zip Archive File (ZIP). This format contains one or more files within it and is compressed to minimize the file's size. Use any zip utility to unzip these archives. Self-Extracting Archive File (EXE). The executable files available on this page automatically unzip an archive file without needing to invoke a Zip file utility. SAS Instruction File (SAS). This format contains plain text which can be edited with a text editor. The instructions are intended for statistical analysis software developed by SAS Institute, Inc. Portable Document File Format (PDF). This format allows formatting that enables full document navigation. You will need Acrobat Reader (a free application) to view and print this document.

Data Files

There are 264,684 records for 2003. The data files are provided in ASCII, dBase, and SAS Transport formats. The ASCII file has a fixed record length of 950 positions. The July 16 update removed 1662 records for Hawaii because of concerns about data collection procedures, and the July 22 update corrected the _FRTINDX and _FV5SRV variables.  The October 8 update corrected miscoded race values in four months of data from Illinois.

2003 BRFSS Data (ASCII) Data Updated October 8, 2004 This file is in ASCII format. It has a fixed record length of 950 positions.	30Mb  30Mb
2003 BRFSS Data (DBF Format) Data Updated October 8, 2004 This file is in dBase format. Please note: variable names have been changed for the dBase files. This file contains 294 variables. Since dBase does not accept leading underline (_) characters, variable names with leading underlines have been changed to begin with an ‘A’. So, _STATE is A_STATE in the dBase file.	42Mb  42Mb
2003 BRFSS Data (SAS Transport Format) Data Updated October 8, 2004 This file was exported from SAS V8.2 in the XPT transport format. This file contains 294 variables. This format can be imported into SPSS or STATA. Please note: some of the variable labels get truncated in the process of converting to the XPT format so they may be slightly different from what is on the SASOUT03.SAS program.	49Mb  49Mb
