The ERC for Reconfigurable Machining Systems at
the University of Michigan (EEC 9529125) maintains an
experimental testbed with computer numerical control
machine tools and measurement equipment, prototype reconfigurable
machines, a reconfigurable control system and a software-based
virtual factory. The facility is used by faculty from
three engineering departments (Mechanical, Electrical
and Industrial Engineering) as well as industry partners
who participate in the research program. Students participating
in the REU program and visiting faculty and engineers
also use the testbed each summer. The ERC has invested
approximately $1.5 million in equipment to date and has
contributed $1 million to the renovation of the space
for their shared facility. In the next year they expect
to build/acquire a reconfigurable inspection machine
at an estimated cost of $500K and to continue work on
the reconfigurable machine tool, which is expected to
cost $400K. All of the machines are essential to the
establishment of a fully functional testbed at the ERC/RMS. |
