According to researchers at the Integrated Media
Systems (IMSC) ERC at the University of Southern California
( EEC-9529152), the “Immersive Internet”
will dramatically change our world within this decade,
transforming our two-dimensional world of computers,
TV and film into immersive, three-dimensional environments
in our own living rooms—or almost anywhere else.
Through Immersipresence, a term coined by IMSC to describe
these 3D immersive environments, remote live scenes will
be transmitted by way of the Internet to augment the
real environment. Key components developed this past
year include: a Flow Scheduling Framework, a cornerstone
of Media Immersion Environment (MIE) architecture which
provides a unified, stream-oriented data and processing
model of an Integrated Media System; Immersive Audio™,
a method for creating and reusing animations in a way
that is suited to a broad range of models; and Network
Stream Reliability and Synchronization, which creates
the network infrastructure on which to build a highly
accurate, synchronized and loss-free platform for immersive
applications and is a key enabler for several other technologies
including MIE. |
