The Integrated Media Systems ERC at the University
of Southern California (EEC-9529152) has approximately
20,000 sq. ft. of laboratory space dedicated to Center
research and educational activities. IMSC laboratories
include computing facilities with more than 250 workstations,
server systems, experimental testbeds, and dedicated
networks connecting the laboratory locations internally
and externally to the campus computer network and to
the Internet. Over $1.3 million has been invested in
facility improvements and infrastructure and more than
$6 million in equipment over the past five years. Due
to the dynamic and ever-changing nature of computer-based
research, an ongoing annual budget of approximately $1
million is required to maintain a state-of-the-art research
facility. Funding for the laboratory and its equipment
comes from a variety of sources including NSF, the University,
other Center grants and contracts as well as cash and
equipment donations from industry. These facilities provide
research and teaching opportunities for IMSC faculty
and students as well as IMSC industry partners, and students
and teachers participating in Center outreach programs.
The Media Immersion Environment demonstration laboratory
provides a venue for showcasing the developing IMSC technologies
to industrial, academic and other visitors to the Center.
Groundbreaking on a new $30 million building on the USC
campus is expected within the next year. IMSC will occupy
approximately 40 percent of this building, providing
for an expanded laboratory structure and inclusion of
all Center research activities under one roof. |
