A Renewal Proposal for an Industrial/University Cooperative Research Program in Nondestructive Evaluation

R. Bruce Thompson, Iowa State University, EEC-9872590

Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) simulation software is now being developed by the I/UCRC for Nondestructive Evaluation based at Iowa State University (EEC-9872590) as a teaching tool for both community college and university levels. Because of difficulty in securing appropriately trained personnel for their NDE needs, the center’s industrial sponsors have encouraged the center to move aggressively in the direction of providing this type of learning tool for all levels of NDE education/training. Based on the principle that simulation can greatly enhance the learning process and can provide feedback to the student in a more rapid and cost-effective manner than is possible in a conventional laboratory, the Center is using an award from the Advanced Technological Education program to develop community college applications and an award from the Combined Research-Curriculum Development Program to support development of applications of the software to undergraduate curriculum applications. In addition, Iowa State University is investing internal resources in the development of distance education modules that make use of the output of the simulations from of the NDE modalities.
