Microelectronics Packaging Startup

Dr. Rao Tummala, Georgia Institute of Technology, EEC-9402723

Quellan, a start-up company produced by the Packaging Research Center (PRC), an Engineering Research Center at Georgia Tech, designs and develops integrated circuits for high-speed optical communications in OC-192 (10 Gbps) and OC-768 (40 Gbps) systems. The company was started in 2001 by PRC faculty member Joy Laskar and is based on the packaging, integration, and convergence of high-speed circuits, optical, and signal processing technologies for optical communications applications. The technology is used in products that increase bandwidth, lower costs, and reduce time-to-market for customers. Quellan has hired three PRC students, used related facilities and equipment for early demonstrations, and leveraged PRC industry relationships into early customer and supplier relationships. Quellan has raised $5M in venture capital, has 28 employees, and anticipates first revenue in late 2002.
