Workshops and Fellowships Link Disparate Communities

Dr. Ulrich Neumann, University of Southern California, EEC-9529152

The Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC), an Engineering Research Center at the University of Southern California and the Ambassador of the United States to Cyprus, Mr. Donald Bandler, organized two information technology (IT) and multimedia technology workshops in Cyprus in 2001 and 2002. These workshops brought together Greek and Turkish Cypriot IT professionals in the "buffer" zone of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. The American Embassy deemed these workshops the most successful bi-communal events in the past 30 years because they served as a catalyst to link university faculty and industry professionals from the two communities in joint projects. Four graduate student fellowships (two each for Greek and Turkish Cypriots) were given to the IMSC by the United States Agency for International Development. These students, 2 women and 2 men, will pursue masters degrees in integrated media systems at IMSC and will work together on IT projects of interest to Cyprus. The collaboration also includes visits to IMSC by Cypriot IT professions from academe and industry. The President of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot Leader thanked the United States for organizing these collaborations to stimulate economic development on the island.
