A "Collaboratory" for Virtual Visualization and Design
of New Materials
Dr. Dan Edie, Clemson University, EEC-9731680
With continually improving imaging technologies, "scientific visualization" is increasingly being used to learn more about everything from planetary surfaces to crystals to molecules and the systems they comprise. The W. M. Keck Foundation recently provided $1.3M to two Engineering Research Centers, the Center for Advanced Engineering Fibers and Films (CAEFF) at Clemson University and MIT, and the Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC), at the University of Southern California, to create a visualization and design studio they call a "collaboratory." The lab combines the strengths of CAEFF in scientific visualization with those of IMSC in the creation of advanced virtual multimedia "environments" to create immersive environments for discovery and learning, along with visualization methodologies for the study of polymeric structure and processing. The system will enable researchers to collaborate long-distance to design new materials using interactive visualization to discover how molecular architecture is related to material properties. The tools will include a graphics supercomputer, panoramic and 3-D displays, high-speed network connections and immersive haptics and audio. |
