Metrology Center Sparks Spin-offs

Dr. Robert Hocken, University of North Carolina Charlotte, EEC-9811556

Four companies have "spun-off" this year from the research results of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte's Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) for Metrology. Wave Guide Solutions develops on-chip wave guide technology for optical communications and already has approximately 10 employees. Opsource develops software systems for optimizing high speed machining. InsituTek, a company started by two graduate students, develops fast tool servo systems using Relaxor piezoelectric ceramics. U.S. Metrology Inc. is an internet provider of metrology methods, algorithms, and information. These spin-offs illustrate that an I/UCRC can be a powerful stimulator for economic growth
