Regional Faculty Workshops

Dr. George D. Petersen, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), EEC-9812888

Over 350,000 U.S. engineering students have been impacted by this initiative to improve the quality of engineering education. The hands–on workshop, developed and delivered by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), prepared engineering faculty to implement continuous program improvement on their campuses. After three years and 12 workshops, the initiative has touched nearly 700 engineering faculty at over 330 institutions nationwide—virtually every undergraduate engineering program in the country. By 2000, the workshops' increasing popularity led to a new series: The ABET Open Enrollment Faculty Workshops. These workshops reach engineering technology, applied science, and computer science faculty. A new series, the Technological Education Initiative (TEI) Workshops, is designed specifically for engineering technology faculty. In 2002, the workshops went global, when 97 engineering faculty from 19 countries spread over three continents gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, for the first ABET International Faculty Workshop for Program Improvement. Additional international ABET workshops are being planned for 2003.
