To support the national goal of better health through physical
activity, CDC's Nutrition and Physical Activity Program has
developed KidsWalk-to-School. This is a community-based program that
aims to increase opportunities for daily physical activity by
encouraging children to walk to and from school in groups
accompanied by adults.

Schools across the globe will be participating in
Walk to School Day* on October 6 during
International Walk to School
Week Oct. 4–8.
The International Walk to School Day encourages pedestrian safety for
children, and gives parents, school teachers, and community leaders an
opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many
benefits of walking. Each year millions of walkers from countries across
the globe walk to school together — all hoping to create communities
that are safer places to walk.

KidsWalk-to-School encourages improved safety on the walk to and from
school by
- Encouraging children to walk in groups.
- Organizing responsible adults to accompany children as they walk to
and from school.
- Teaching and practicing safe pedestrian behavior during the walk to
and from school.
- Empowering neighborhoods to work together with local agencies, such
as the department of public works, to identify and create safe routes to
school.
- Partnering with local police to enforce speed limits in and around
schools.
- Providing crossing guards for children on their way to and from
school.
