CDC's Food Safety Office 
A Nation Free of Foodborne Illness 

Our Mission 

The mission of CDC's Food Safety Office is to lead CDC’s food safety programs to prevent illness, disability and death due to domestic and imported foodborne diseases. We collaborate with and support other CDC organizations with focus on attainment of food safety program plans, goals and objectives. We work in partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), state and local health departments, and other public and private organizations to strengthen regulations and policies for prevention of foodborne diseases. 

Our Objectives 

  • Build epidemiology and laboratory capacity
  • Improve foodborne disease surveillance and outbreak response systems
  • Support applied research and technology transfer projects
  • Provide prevention training and education
  • Communicate food safety information
  • Measure social and economic burden associated with foodborne diseases
  • Develop and build effective partnerships, government agencies and private organizations
