Areas of NICHD Research Related to Women's Health

The NICHD is home to much of the nation's leading science related to women's overall health, gynecological health, pregnancy, and childbirth, as well as studies of diseases and conditions related to these topics.

The Institute studies and supports programs in the following general research areas.

Women's Overall and Gynecological Health includes topics like menstruation, urinary tract health, physical growth and maturity, contraception and family planning behaviors, and gynecological health among physically disabled populations, just to name a few.

Pregnancy and Birth includes, but is not limited to, topics such as prenatal care, miscarriage and stillbirth, preterm labor and premature birth, disorders of pregnancy, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), birth defects and developmental disabilities, drug safety in pregnant women, and reproductive health among physically disabled populations.

Diseases, Disorders, and Selected Treatments

  • NICHD research efforts include: problems experienced mostly or only by females, such as vulvodynia, vaginitis, pelvic floor disorders, pelvic pain, and uterine fibroids; disorders related to infertility, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian failure (POF), and endometriosis; and sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs/STIs).

  • The special needs and health concerns of women affected by HIV/AIDS are also important research areas for the NICHD, and include topics such as transmission prevention, pediatric HIV/AIDS, therapies and interventions, vaccine development, pregnancy and HIV/AIDS, breastfeeding and HIV/AIDS, and others.

  • Research on treatments and interventions is also a priority for the Institute, including antibiotics, pain medication, hormone treatments and therapies (including pre- and postmenopausal hormone replacement), minor or less-invasive surgical procedures (including laparoscopy and hysteroscopy), and surgery (including myomectomy and hysterectomy), used to treat some women's health conditions.
