Realignment: CFSAN'S Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements

CFSAN's Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements (ONPLDS) has recently been realigned. The Office is now organized by product categories to better align and coordinate staff activities and to make ONPLDS more identifiable to the agency's stakeholders. The realigned office features separate units for dietary supplements, nutrition labeling and program activities, infant formula and medical food, foods standards and labeling, and analytical and database research.

ONPLDS is responsible for developing policy and regulations for dietary supplements, nutrition labeling and food standards, infant formula and medical foods as well as for scientific evaluation to support such regulations and related policy development. ONPLDS staff also support compliance/enforcement actions and will continue to be responsible for the clinical review, data summaries, and, as appropriate, follow-up and research related to adverse events associated with dietary supplements and infant formula.

ONPLDS continues to be headed by Dr. Christine Taylor, with Ms. Virginia Wilkening as Deputy Director. Housed within the Office of the Director are the Associate Director for Clinical Affairs, the Outreach and Education Team, and several Special Assistants.

The Office now consists of four Divisions and one Staff:

• The Division of Dietary Supplement Programs, temporarily headed by Dr. Susan Walker, is the focal point for dietary supplement policy, reviews, and regulations.
• The Division of Nutrition Programs and Labeling, headed by Dr. Kathy Ellwood, is the focal point for health claims, nutrition labeling, food fortification, and dietary guidance policies.
• The Division of Food Labeling and Standards, headed by Ms. Felicia Satchell, handles non-nutrition labeling (e.g., allergen and irradiation labeling), as well as standards of identity.
• The Division of Research and Applied Technology, headed by Dr. Jeanne Rader, is the focal point for analytical methods development and related research to support the work of the Office.
• The Infant Formula and Medical Foods Staff, headed temporarily by Dr. Charles Mize, deals with infant formula issues, regulation and policy development.
