Security Pact With Its Neighbors Would Benefit North Korea
United States continues to support Six-Party Talks, Powell says

It would be in North Korea's best interests to have a security agreement with all its neighbors in the region, says Secretary of State Colin Powell.

"I would argue to the North Koreans that they're better off getting a security agreement from all of its neighbors and the United States, as opposed to just from the United States," Powell said in an October 25 interview with CNN International Television. But security assurances, he said, will not be forthcoming until North Korea abandons its nuclear weapons programs in a "complete and verifiable manner." (complete text)



Mandate for Economic Reform in Indonesia, Treasury Official Says
President Yudhoyono urged to tackle critical financial issues

Newly elected Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has a strong mandate for an agenda of economic reforms, according to David P. Loevinger, deputy assistant secretary for Africa, the Middle East, and Asia at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Loevinger gave the keynote address at an October 21 conference on "Indonesia's Future Economic Growth: Agenda for the New Government." The event was sponsored by the United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) and the consulting firm Development Alternatives Inc. (DAI). (complete text)



North Korea "Foremost" in Spreading Missile Technology, Bolton Says
State's arms control chief says profits go largely to DPRK nuclear program

North Korea is "the world's foremost proliferator of ballistic missiles and related technology to rogue states and hostile regimes," Under Secretary of State for Arms Control John Bolton says. In Tokyo for anti-proliferation military exercises, Bolton says Pyongyang's missile program has a destabilizing effect on regions around the world. (complete text)
