For Citizens
For Citizens Surplus Federal Property is a Good Deal

A variety of personal property the federal government no longer needs can be obtained by organizations and the general public. It is done through two programs: Federal Surplus Personal Property Donation and Federal Surplus Sales.

Donations of surplus federal property can be made to eligible organizations such as local government agencies and nonprofit educational and public health activities. They work through their local State Agencies for Surplus Property (SASP) to obtain property for reuse in their organizations. SASP charges the cost of care and handling—a fraction of the cost to buy new. For contact information, visit the appropriate SASP.

If it is decided that the reuse of surplus by eligible organizations is not cost effective, then the property is eligible for sale to private citizens. Along with surplus property, exchange/sale property (that is property agencies need to replace) is also available to the general public for sale.

GSA has revolutionized the sale of personal property by hosting an auction website called GSA Auctions®. Not long ago, surplus and exchange/sale property sales were only conducted at regional locations using traditional sales methods like sealed bids and onsite auctions. Now, online capabilities allow GSA to offer assets from computers to exotic jewelry to any interested buyer regardless of location.
