   Accessing Books at NCBI

There are two ways to access the books at NCBI:

1. by searching the books directly (show me ...)

2. by finding book links in PubMed abstracts (show me ...)

   1. Searching the Books Directly

Searches can be made from the books homepage by typing a search term into the textbox (1) and clicking "Go" (2).

When the term is found more than 20 times within the book collection, this search result first displays an overview of the books that contain the search term:

The number at the far right represents the number of sections of the book that were found to contain the term. Clicking on this number displays details about the sections of the book (see below). Clicking on the book cover thumbnail (left) will display the book's table of contents.

Note: when fewer than 20 sections are hit across all books, only the section details are displayed, i.e., the book overview page is skipped.

The book sections are listed in order of relevance to the search term, with the most relevant being listed first. The title of the most relevant part of the book is hyperlinked, with additional context given below.

Each book "page" has a navigation bar that allows other parts of the book to be found. All figures, tables, and boxes are hyperlinked where cited in the text, as well as in the navigation bar of the section they are first cited.

Books can also be searched from the search box found at the bottom of the navigation bar:

   2. Finding Book Links in PubMed

The online books can be accessed from the abstracts of PubMed articles via the "Books" hyperlink:

The Books hyperlink will take the user to a facsimile of the abstract, in which some phrases are hypertext links. These phrases correspond to terms that are also found in the books available at NCBI.

Clicking on a hypertext link takes the reader to a list of books in which the phrase is found.
