photo of Annie FairCAPT Fair is the Women’s Health Coordinator in Region IV for the Office on Women’s Health, Office of Public Health and Science, DHHS. Region IV serves Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. There is one Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at the University of Mississippi, located in Jackson. There are two Community Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health at Cooper Green Hospital, located in Birmingham, Alabama and Turley Family Health Center, located in Clearwater, Florida.

CAPT Fair was commissioned in the U.S. Public Health Service in 1986 after completing a master’s degree in public health and a master’s degree in social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a native of Pembroke, North Carolina and a member of the Lumbee Indian Tribe. CAPT Fair began her career with the Indian Health Service in Phoenix, Arizona where she provided direct and consultative services to the Gila River Indian Community, and the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. During this assignment she was instrumental in establishing a community wide child protection team which focused on improving coordination and collaboration of child abuse and neglect cases. She completed thirteen years of service with IHS before transferring OPHS.

In her current assignment, CAPT Fair is working with states to convene community diabetes forums which focus on the prevention and management of the disease, and what local communities can do to respond to the rising rates of overweight and obesity. CAPT Fair works closely with the state women’s health coordinators and other community partners to advance the mission of OWH to improve the health status of women across the lifespan.
