Charles McGarvey, MS, PT
Chief, Physical Therapy Section
Charlie McGarvey´s research and clinical interests are in the areas of oncology and intrinsic muscle disease. He has developed a number of research projects to document effectiveness of pharmacological interventions in patients with polymyositis. He has also worked exclusively with oncology patients for over 15 years and has authored many articles and chapters in books related to physical therapy and oncology.


Sandra Adams, PT
Clinical Coordinator
Sandra Adams has been active in numerous areas of clinical endeavor for the past 18 years. While serving as clinical coordinator, most of her time and attention is devoted to the smooth operation of clinical efforts and efficient patient care. She has been involved in developing a Bone Marrow Transplant Exercise Booklet published by the Public Health Service and in developing resources and research protocols for the rehabilitation of breast cancer patients. Other areas of interest include cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and wound care.


Elizabeth Augustine, MS, PT
Oncology Coordinator
Elizabeth Augustine´s clinical and research interests are the assessment and management of lymphedema. She has developed the lymphedema management program at NIH in oncology patients, using complex lymphatic therapy (compression bandaging, lymphatic massage, compression garments, and exercise) based on Casely-Smith´s techniques of Australia.


Holly Lea Cintas, PhD, PT, PCS
Research Coordinator
Holly Cintas is responsible for the coordination of all research protocols involving the Physical Therapy Section. Her clinical and research interests include motor skill progression in infants and children with osteogenesis imperfecta, psychological factors influencing motor skill attainment, and the relationship of muscle strength to functional motor skills across the lifespan.


Earllaine Croarkin, MPT
Senior Physical Therapist
Earllaine Croarkin has been involved in developing a multidisciplinary effort to research the effects of the forced-use paradigm in the ischemic subcortical stroke protocol. and the use of amphetamines to accelerate the rate of motor recovery. Her other interests include treatment of patients after soft-tissue sarcoma removal and treatment of patients with osteoporosis.


Bart Drinkard, MS, PT, CCS
Exercise Testing Coordinator
Bart Drinkard´s clinical and research interests lie in the area of cardiopulmonary and orthopedic physical therapy. Bart has developed a number of research protocols involving measurement development and applications in exercise testing.


Michael Harris-Love, MPT, CSCS

            Staff Physical Therapist

Michael Harris-Love has clinical interests in the treatment of neuromuscular disorders, parkinsonian syndromes, and foot/ankle dysfunction secondary to neurological impairment.  He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist  and his research interests include the characterization of skeletal muscle performance via functional assessment batteries and isokinetic testing methods.


Minal Jain, MS, PT, PCS, ETT
Pediatric Coordinator
Minal Jain is the coordinator of pediatric services. She is certified as a pediatric specialist through the APTA, and as an exercise test technologist through the ACSM. Her research interest is in the area of pediatric oncology and genetics. She recently developed the physical therapy assessment battery for the Childhood Brain Tumor and Childhood Osteoporosis protocols. She is the lead therapist for the Juvenile Dermatomyositis Protocol and assists with the Childhood Obesity protocol.


Susan Mihan, MS, PT
                Senior Physical Therapist

Susan Mihans' clinical interest revolve around cardiopulmonary functioning in various patient populations, especially in patients with cardiopulmonary disease.  In addition, she has worked extensively with critically ill patients in medical and trauma ICU's.  Her research interests lie in cardiopulmonary exercise testing with a variety of patient groups.


Joseph Shrader, PT, C.PED

Clinical Specialist
Joseph Shrader´s clinical interests include the evaluation and treatment of complex foot and ankle dysfunction, with a special emphasis on biomechanics. The population primarily seen by Joe includes patients with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosis. His research interests include management of tendinitis and foot orthosis efficacy for patients with systemic arthritis.


Michaele Smith, PT
Education Coordinator
Michaele Smith is the education coordinator of students interested in physical therapy affiliations and programs. She is currently developing a clinical residency training program to replace the existing traditional affiliation program.  She is a credentialed clinical instructor through the American Physical Therapy Association.  She has developed the pediatric program, educational program, and the alternative specialist guidelines for the Therapist Professional Advisory Committee (TPAC). Her clinical and research interests are in the area of pediatric HIV infection, human genetics and the ischemic subcortical stroke protocol.  She has presented and written articles on the topic of pediatric HIV infection at national and international conferences.
