Method for Pulping Wood Chips Using Separate Alkaii and Peroxymonosulfate Treatments

Agency:

Forest Service

Technology Description:

This invention is a method of pulping wood chips by first pre-treating the chips with an alkaline solution, then treating them with a peroxymonosulfate solution and finally extracting the fragmented lignin from the chips using another alkaline solution. The alkaline pretreatment swells the chips, thereby making them permeable. This allows the peroxymonosulfate to penetrate to the center of the chips, making pulping possible. This technology provides a method for producing chemical pulps with very low lignin contents, which allows them to be easily bleached without the use of chlorine containing reagents. The method can be practiced at low temperatures (at or below 50C) and at atmospheric pressure. High yield, high strength, low lignin chemical pulps are the end result of the method.
