National Programs Methyl Bromide Alternatives
ARS National Program Methyl Bromide (MB) is a highly efficacious soil fumigant for over 100 crops and forest and ornamental nurseries. It is also used to kill arthropod pests in postharvest commodities and to fumigate structures. Consistent with the Montreal Protocol decision that MB depletes the stratosphereic ozone layer, the U.S. will ban the production and importation of MB on January 1, 20005. The development of alternatives to MB will have a major impact on the U.S. agricultural industry and alternatives to its use must be found.
