Next Generation Networking Awards

Overview

In 1998, NLM announced a new, three-phased NGI research program to develop innovative medical projects that demonstrate the application and use of NGI capabilities:

In October 1998, NLM announced the initial award of 24 Phase I contracts to medical institutions and companies. Summaries for Phase I project awards are available.

Under Phase II contracts awarded in early FY2000, projects are being implemented in local test-bed settings. Summaries for all Phase II NGI projects are available.

Contracts to apply scaleable advanced network infrastructure to healthcare testbeds were awarded in late FY2003. Summaries for all scaleable information infrastructure (SII) projects are available.

Further Information and Additional Resources

To assist in the development of an NGI that meets the nation's health requirements, NLM has funded a study by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the Academy has examined ways in which the Internet can be used to support applications in clinical care, consumer health, public health, health care finance and administration, professional education, and biomedical research. The report, Networking Health: Prescriptions for the Internet, was released on 23 February 2000. (See disclaimer)
