Hydrographic Systems and Technology
Cartographic and Geospatial Technology Marine Modeling and Analysis

The Coast Survey Development Laboratory (CSDL) develops and improves cartographic, hydrographic, and oceanographic systems used by the Coast Survey and the National Ocean Service to provide products and services for the coastal marine community, especially in support of safe and efficient navigation and the utilization and protection of the coast.  The Laboratory consists of three organizational parts-- Cartographic and Geospatial Technology Programs (CGTP), Hydrographic Systems and Technology Programs (HSTP), and Marine Modeling and Analysis Programs (MMAP).

The main focus of the Cartographic and Geospatial Technology Programs is to develop techniques and technology for improving paper and electronic charts and providing vector data for marine Geographic Information Systems. Projects include bathymetric/topographic projects, vector electronic chart development, historical maps and charts collection, and marine geographic databases.

The main focus of the Hydrographic Systems and Technology Programs is to develop techniques and technology for efficiently and accurately measuring depths, shoreline, and bottom characteristics and locating underwater hazards. Projects include advances in measurement technology using shallow-water multibeam sonars; high-speed, high-resolution side-scan sonars; lasers (SHOALS); and on-the-fly GPS for settlement and squat determination and vertical control of hydrographic surveys.

The main focus of the Marine Modeling and Analysis Programs is to develop techniques and methods for the analysis, simulation and accurate real-time prediction of oceanographic, atmospheric and water quality parameters. Projects include estuarine and port modeling and forecasting, coastal modeling and forecasting, and operational data resources.
