Asthma
Over 2 million people age 65 and older have asthma. Asthma occurs
when your bronchial tubes become inflamed. This inflammation can
cause minor wheezing to extremely labored breathing. Mortality
rates are low because the condition is manageable and there are
warning signs that attacks are coming. Diagnosis is sometimes
difficult in older adults because symptoms may be confused with
other lung diseases such as bronchitis. Also, older Americans
should be careful when taking asthma medications with other medications
they may already be taking to avoid any adverse reactions.
