Profile of Older Persons: 2003 [PDF version] for better printing]
Electronic version of the popular brochure with the latest key statistics on older Americans in 12 key subject areas. It includes both narrative and statistical charts -- the 2003 edition is only available online. 

Older Americans 2000: Key Indicators of Well-Being (Off Site)
This report of the Federal Forum on Aging-Related Statistics covers 31 key indicators carefully selected by the Forum to portray aspects of the lives of older Americans and their families.  The report is divided into five subject areas:  population, economics, health status, health risks and behaviors, and health care.  See also: Facts and Figures: Statistics on Minority Aging in the U.S. adapted by AoA from the Indicator data.

National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (Off Site)
Includes both NACDA publications and information about datasets which cover many areas of aging. NACDA has also started making selected public datasets (Off Site) available online for downloading including the National Senior Citizens Survey and others.

Fedstats (Off Site)
More than 70 agencies in the Federal Government produce statistics of interest to the public. The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy maintains this site to provide easy access to the full range of statistics and information produced by these agencies for public use.

General Access Tools: (Off Site)
The Census Bureau web site includes a variety of Access Tools to help users extract tables.  Of special interest is the new American Factfinder system which lets users construct their own tables online from various Census data sources including the 1990 Census - 2000 Census data is being added during 2001 - 2003.  Other Access Tools include:  U.S. Gazetteer (http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer - gets data by place name or zip code), two data extraction tools: Ferret http://ferret.bls.census.gov/cgi-bin/ferret (CPS only) and the Data Extraction System (DES) (http://www.census.gov/DES/www/welcome.html). Census also includes Search mechanisms to search for a word place, or map.

A series on tables both in summary form and with varying degrees of detail which show the projected growth of the aging population State. Also included are state ranking. (Off Site)

Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2002  
Online version of this popular, annually updated, collection of statistical information.  Section 1 Population contains many tables on aging.  See also: State and Metropolitan Area Data Book (2000) (Off Site)

Older Population by Age: 1900 - 2050 - Table and two charts (with an option to download as a spreadsheet) showing the past and projected growth of the older population. Developed by AoA based on Census data presented in 65+ in the United States (see above). (Off Site)

Aging into the 21st Century
AoA funded special report developed in 1996 by noted demographer Jacob Siegel providing the projections on the future elderly population. Includes population, marital status, and ousehold information as well as information about labor force participation, income, education, living arrangements, and life expectancy.

Statistical Tables on 1990 Population and Housing Patterns Among Older Americans
Sixteen (16) statistical tables on the 1990 Population and Housing Patterns Among Older Americans. These tables are based on the data from Special Tabulation on Aging using 1990 Census data. They cover such areas as mobility and self-care limitations, ousing characteristics, educational, marital, living arrangements, poverty and income status, as well as income distribution of the elderly. They are available both in html and pdf format (instructions and a link to the free pdf reader software are provided).

NIA Centers on the Demography of Aging
Home page for links to the nine centers on the Demography of Aging sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) which conduct research on health, social factors, economics, and other issues that affect the U.S. older population. Changes in the Older Population and Implications for Rural Areas
This analysis presents data on changes in the age distribution and socioeconomic status of the older population by rural-urban residence and examines the implications for resources, services, and programs in rural areas. (Off Site)

Aging Activities of the National Center for Health Statistics
The National Center for Health Statistics ( NCHS) web site includes this section on aging related publications, data, and off-site links. Of particular interest are:

  • Health, United States, 1999 with Health and Aging Chartbook
    HHS annual report on the health status of the nation -- the 1999 accompanying Chartbook focuses on the health of older people with many tables and charts, as well as explanatory text.  More recent editions of Health, United States also contain considerable data on the aging. (Off Site)
  • Trends in Health and Aging
    A  Web-based data archive designed to show trends in health-related behaviors, health status, health care utilization, and health care costs of the older population.  The warehouse contains information from a variety of national and state level data systems, the majority maintained by NCHS. The Warehouse is a dynamic system; series based on regular collection systems are updated as soon as new figures become available. Moreover, the number of topics grows as important new data are made available. Using the free, add-on software provided, the user can manipulate the data tables in a spreadsheet-like environment.   • Longitudinal Studies of Aging
    A family of surveys designed to measure changes in health status, health-related behaviors, health care utilization, and the causes and consequences of these changes within and across two cohorts of elderly Americans. (Off Site)

Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD)
These nationally representative longitudinal data collections begun in the early 1990s examine retirement and the aging of society. Included are information about these studies, papers and publication, and data files for downloading. (Off Site)

Long Term Care and Disability

Americans with Disabilities: 1997
Data from the 1997 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) - includes a report (in excel and pdf) as well as key tables.  For the key national totals, see the AoA compiled version of the table 1 [PDF version], (disability by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin); [also available as an Excel spreadsheet file for downloading].   See also Summary Table for Persons 65+ [Excel spreadsheet file] and [PDF version]. 

Disability Characteristics: 1990 Census
Several Census publications and data sources on disability status including a recent report (with aging as a variable) as well as data tables based on the 1990 Census with a section of tables by age (see Table 2). Includes national data as well as data by state and metropolitan area with breakdowns by sex and race/ethnicity. (Off Site)

National Health Interview Survey on Disability (NHIS-D)
Web site for this important new survey includes considerable information about this survey but only a modest amount of actual data at this time.  More data should be added as analysis of this survey is conducted. (Off Site)

  • Number and Percent of Persons Reporting Problems with Two or More Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), By Age, Race, Gender, Poverty, Living Arrangements, Region, and Area of Residence. 1994-1995 [PDF version] - a very useful summary table based on the 1994-1995 National Health Interview Survey on Disability.

Disability Statistics Center
A very useful source of data on disabilities, some of it specifically for the 65+ age group.  The Center produces Disability Statistics Reports - a series of detailed research reports, and Disability Statistics Abstracts a series of short research briefs which are printed by NIDRR.  The reports section contains links to many detailed tables.  See, for example, Rate of Difficulty in Mobility or Self-care per Thousand People Aged 16 and Older, by Age Group and State: 1990 Census  (Off site)

ASPE's Office of Disability, Aging, and Long-term Care Policy
Results of a number of research studies by HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Policy and Evaluation (ASPE) -- These short documents highlight policy relevant findings primarily from ASPE in-house and funded research. They contain statistical tables on a number of issues relating to aging (especially long term care). (Off Site)

Social Security Administration Statistical Information
Statistical data and research analyses of the old-age, survivors, and disability (OASDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. See the Publications section of this web site for much published data, e.g., Fast Facts and Figures...  See also the Research section of the web site which includes both descriptions of ongoing studies and some links for actual data (especially the New Beneficiary Study). Bureau of Labor Statistics Data
BLS has extensive data on employment and income of the entire population with many tables providing breakdowns by age. Of particular interest are the data on Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey which includes some tables with data on the older worker. (Off Site)

International Programs Center - Studies and Reports
The IPC, part of the Population Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, conducts demographic and socioeconomic studies covering areas outside the 50 State (and DC) including other countries, insular areas and US Territories. Several of the IPC studies focus on aging from an international perspective. (Off Site)

Census Bureau Statistics on Educational Attainment
Data on educational attainment, including data by age, based on the annual Current Population Survey. (Off Site)

HUD User Data Sets
Original electronic data sets generated by HUD sponsored data collection efforts, including the American Housing Survey, HUD median family income limits, as well as microdata from research initiatives on topics such as housing discrimination, the HUD-insured multifamily housing stock, and the public housing population. (Off Site)

American Housing Survey
The national American Housing Survey, conducted every 2 years by the Bureau of Census for HUD, provides detailed data on housing costs, home financing, household equipment, housing and neighborhood conditions, and the households that occupy them. (Off Site)
