New Checked Bag Security: Beginning 01/18/02, more comprehensive screening processes were put in place. A combination of passenger bag matching, manual searching, explosive-sniffing dogs and explosive-detection technology is being used to screen checked luggage. If bags have been checked, and a boarding pass received, travelers may experience less flexibility in changing flight times or routings. See an airline customer service agent as soon as possible if last minute changes are required so they can explain your options. New Security Fee: The US Congress enacted the "September 11 Security Fee" which will apply to all tickets sold beginning 02/01/02. The airlines will collect a $2.50 fee for each flight segment on the itinerary that boards in the US and US Territories and possessions, including connecting flights requiring re-boarding. The maximum charge is $5 for a one-way itinerary and $10 for a round-trip, regardless of the number of connections. This fee will be in addition to the quoted GSA-contract fare, so travelers will see a small difference in the published contract fare and the amount charged to their travel card. Airport Wait time Information: Airlines are still requiring two hour advance check in for domestic travel, and three for overseas travel. Travelers are strongly urged to make use of airline websites to check on the "current" status of airport wait time for a particular airport. Airlines are trying to keep this information current online to aid their customers. |
