Precautions recommended by the American Hotel and Motel Association
SAFE DEPOSIT BOXES are available at the Front Desk, or in each room, for safeguarding your valuables. Under state law, the hotel is not responsible for loss of articles unless they have been properly secured in these boxes. Always be sure to secure your DEADBOLT LOCK when in your room.
Use the PEEPHOLE and fully identify all visitors. If you doubt anyone's identity, please contact the Front Desk and ask if someone from the staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.
Do not needlessly display guest room keys in public or carelessly leave them on restaurant tables or other places where they can be easily stolen.
INSURE that all windows and connecting doors are LOCKED.
INSURE that you have removed all valuables from your vehicle and locked your car. Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.
Do not invite STRANGERS to your room.
Note the location of EMERGENCY FIRE EXITS displayed on your guest room door.
DIAL 0 to report fire or smoke. Use the STAIRS instead of the elevator during a fire emergency.
If you return to the NAC late at night, be sure to use the main entrance. Have ID with you. Always pay attention and check out parking lots before entering them. If you see any suspicious activity, please report your observation to the staff.

Parking passes are available at the front desk for $3.00 per day. They should be displayed in the driver's side rear window. This permit entitles the user to daily parking at any of the GREEN University of South Carolina meters in the designated lots, not on the street. Money in the meters is not necessary with these permits.
The designated areas are the Pendleton Street Garage in the lower levels (only at the green meters); College Street (from Pendleton, take a right on Barnwell then right on College St.); and the small lot on Henderson Street.
The green meters on the street are NOT considered a DESIGNATED AREA. If you park there, you will be ticketed. The NAC cannot be held responsible for tickets that guests receive as a result of parking in any non-designated areas.
If you need to locate the designated areas, maps are available at the front desk, or any front desk associate can give you directions.
Please note that the University requires head-in parking only. This means that if you back into a parking space you will receive a ticket whether or not you have a permit.
The National Advocacy Center (NAC) is a business facility dedicated to professional training for federal, state, and local prosecutors. While it has similarities to hotels, university facilities, and other public buildings, it operates under very specific rules and procedures. You will be responsible for following these rules and procedures upon arrival:
1. Legal Jurisdiction - The NAC operates under both federal and state legal jurisdiction.
2. Public Building Designation - The facility is governed by the Federal Public Building Regulations which can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations (a copy of which is posted in the building). Special attention should be paid to the regulations pertaining to weapons and alcohol.
3. Weapons - Weapons, especially firearms, are prohibited on the premises of the NAC. If a program participant, other than licensed law enforcement, brings a firearm to the NAC, it must be surrendered to the security officer at registration and will be picked up by the University's Police and stored. It will be the responsibility of the participant to retrieve the firearm upon leaving the training program.
4. Decorum - This facility is designed for training to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of program participants in their work, and an atmosphere conducive to that purpose is expected. Conduct and behavior inconsistent with this purpose will not be permitted.
5. Alcoholic Beverages - Possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages at the NAC are restricted to the facility lounge during the hours of operation. Alcoholic beverages are permitted in individual guest rooms. Conduct and behavior inconsistent with this purpose will be not permitted.
6. Access and Security - All program participants will receive a photo identification card upon admission to the building and registration at the facility. It is the responsibility of the participant to maintain and safeguard this ID. The facility is guarded and monitored by security cameras. Visitors of participants must sign-in and wait at the guard station in the lobby for approved entry, and then must be escorted while in the facility. Visitors are the responsibility of the participant being visited, who must control the location, duration, and conduct of these visits. All visitors must leave the facility by midnight.
7. Non-participant Overnight Guests - In keeping with the concept of a business facility dedicated to training, the guestrooms are limited to single occupancy by properly credentialed program participants. If a program participant anticipates overnight visits by friends, family members, or other persons during a training course, it is the responsibility of that participant to secure off-premises housing for those persons.
8. Dress and Attire - Dress at the facility must be appropriate for the occasion. Business attire will be expected at all advocacy courses. Business casual attire will be expected at all other training sessions (no jeans, shorts, tank tops, T-shirts) unless otherwise noted. Dress in the lounge and other common areas is casual but consistent with the decorum of the building. Participants visiting the workout facility or joining in the aerobic classes may dress appropriately for those events.
9. Attendance - Attendance at training sessions is mandatory, and prompt appearance at training sessions is expected.
10. Smoking - The building is a no-smoking facility. However, smoking will be permitted in a limited number of guestrooms (15%) and will otherwise be restricted to specifically designated areas.
11. Parking - Participants who drive to the NAC will be required to purchase parking for use at surrounding garages and meters. Passes are available for periods as short as one day and are available for purchase at the front desk.
12. Telephone Charges - All long distance and other telephone charges incurred in the facility guestrooms must be paid for by credit card at the time the charges are incurred. Charges cannot be billed to rooms.
13. Violations - Violation of facility policies is cause for expulsion from the facility.

Chartered in 1801, the Horseshoe, the original campus of the University of South Carolina, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Within the four city blocks stand ten buildings from the early 19th century, essentially restored to their original appearance and used as living quarters, classrooms, and faculty offices.
As in all architecture, climate was a dominant force in the college's design. Fires were always a threat to the buildings in winter because fireplaces were the only means of heating, and each room had one. So the buildings were made of brick, locally available and cheap. Concurrently, the main floors of the buildings, designed as faculty residences, were above ground-level -- a plan which promoted air circulation during South Carolina's infamous long, hot summers.
Robert Mills, the nation's first federal architect and the designer of the Washington Monument, greatly influenced the architecture of South Carolina College. Mills was involved in the design of Rutledge College, the South Caroliniana Library, and Maxcy Monument in the center of the Horseshoe, named for the first president of the college, Jonathon Maxcy.
Student life belied today's serene surroundings. A rowdy young all-white, all-male student body populated a mud-covered campus scarred with carriage and wagon ruts. In untidy back yards were outbuildings which included chicken houses, privies, carriage houses, and servants' quarters.
South Carolina College was a highly respected institution with a renowned faculty, until the Civil War, when classes were suspended after most of the student body enlisted in the Army of the Confederacy. During the war, the college buildings were used as a hospital. For a short while after the war, the buildings housed both federal and state offices, in addition to refugees and prisoners.
The Columbia Museum of Art opened in 1950 and has offered Columbia residents and visitors great national and international art as well as local art. During the year, temporary exhibitions can be seen on a rotating basis in several galleries. The museum's diverse collection of American and European paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and decorative arts provide a range of works from ancient times to the present. Educational programs are offered year-round and include lectures, films, musical presentations, and children's activities.
Of special interest is the Samuel H. Kress Collection. Mr. Kress, founder of the S.H. Kress dime stores, assembled a collection of world renowned Baroque and Renaissance art. Mr. Kress gave his collection of art to museums and universities across the country. Through the generosity of the Kress Foundation and additional private gifts, the Columbia Museum of Art is home to one of the most impressive collections of Baroque and Renaissance paintings, sculpture, and furniture in the Southeast.
The Columbia Museum of Art relocated to a new museum on July 18, 1998. Located at the corner of Main and Hampton Streets, it is now the largest art museum in South Carolina. The 21,000 square feet of exhibition space is three times larger than the previous museum home. The new museum also features a 160-seat auditorium, an art library, cafe, museum shop, public reception area, and a plaza and gardens area.
