Publishers approved for participation in PubMed should supply their formatted citations by FTP prior to or at the time of publication. It is critical that we receive XML files on a timely basis to ensure speedy entry of citation and abstract data into the system. FTP facilities are available for publishers to send data in a confidential and reliable manner. NLM then adds these citations to the PubMed database and returns the PubMed Identifiers (PMIDs) to the publisher. Publishers must submit sample records to NLM before participation begins.
Publishers must submit citation data to NCBI for processing into PubMed using
the required standard data
format.
A citation matching service is available for publishers to obtain the PMIDs of the references in their articles and link these references back to PubMed.
