National Library of Medicine's NGI & Telemedicine Projects

Telemedicine Symposium Proceedings Available

Next Generation Internet (NGI) Projects
- In 1998, NLM announced a new, three-phase NGI research program to develop innovative medical projects that demonstrate the use of the capabilities of the Next Generation Internet (NGI). Information about Phase I and Phase II awards is available.
NLM Telemedicine Initiative
- NLM, in October 1996, announced the award of 19 multi-year contracts in telemedicine. Several additional awards were made in September 1997. Information about this program and the projects funded is available. Studies are designed to accomplish the:
- Evaluation of the impact of telemedicine on cost, quality, and access to health care;
- Assessment of various approaches to ensuring the confidentiality of health data transmitted via electronic networks; and
- Testing of emerging health data standards.
High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC)
- In a May 10, 1994 press release, NLM announced the award of twelve contracts designed to help physicians practice better medicine by using advanced computing and networking capabilities along the "information superhighway."
Telemedicine Information Exchange (TIE)
- Now funded by the National Library of Medicine, TIE's website offers updated and expanded coverage of the multidisciplinary field of telemedicine.
