Accessing the NSLS -> Before You Arrive
= required
 1. User Registration
All researchers coming to the NSLS to work on a beamline must have an active appointment with Brookhaven National Laboratory which involves an online registration process and approval. In some cases, it can take up to 120 days to obtain necessary approvals, so early registration is strongly suggested. Click here to begin the process.

PLEASE NOTE:  All new users should confirm that all necessary approvals are in order before traveling to the NSLS. If you have questions, please contact the NSLS User Administration Office at (631) 344-7976.
 2. Safety Training
All new users and users with expired badges must complete/update their safety training prior to access to the experimental floor. These training modules can be completed online prior to arrival at the NSLS. This is strongly recommended since it saves a considerable amount of time during the check-in process at the NSLS. Click here to complete the online safety training.
 3. Safety Approval Form
A Safety Approval Form (SAF) must be completed for every experiment at the NSLS to reduce or eliminate possible risks and hazards associated with your experiment. SAFs must submitted through the Proposal, Allocation, Safety and Scheduling (PASS) https://pass.nsls.bnl.gov/ at least 7 days prior to the start date of "routine" experiments. SAFs are good for 1 year. For experiments that present unusual risk, you must contact the NSLS Experimental Review Coordinator directly as early as practical during the planning of your work. Time is needed to review your form and for configuring appropriate controls. Some experiments require committee review, which may take several months to complete. For complete information on safety at the NSLS, consult the Environmental Safety and Health Guide.
 4. Register for Gate Access
All NSLS users are required to complete the Guest Check In/Out Form prior to arrival.
 5. What you MUST bring
All users must bring proper identification during their visits to BNL. Failure to possess current identification may result in your inability to be granted access to the BNL site.
 6. Travel and Lodging
Information on travel and lodging, including directions to BNL can be found here. Specific details on housing rates and reservations on the BNL campus can be found here.
