The following variations are listed in chronological order. They are excerpted from the quarterly notices which are listed under Quarterly Notices of Variations.

Variations granted to the 4-year service limit for term appointments contained in 5 CFR 316.301:

On May 24, 1995, variation was granted to permit extension of a term appointment for 90 days beyond the regulatory 4-year limit for a Financial Management Specialist, GS-1160-14, with the Resolution Trust Corporation in Washington, DC. The incumbent was engaged in litigation recoveries from an investment banking company.

On June 1, 1995, variation was granted to permit the extension of a term appointment for 1 year beyond the regulatory 4-year limit, for a Geologist, GS-1350-11 with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, who was working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on a space program designed to study the earth's natural resources and hazard problems.

On June 1, 1995, variation was granted to permit a 1 year extension beyond the regulatory limit of a term appointment for a Geologist, GS-1350-11, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Los Angeles, CA. The employee was working on a project involving the study of earthquake recurrence in the San Francisco Bay area.

On June 5, 1995, a second 2-year extension was granted for 5 Equipment Installers, WG-5301-8, with the Army Materiel Command, Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois, engaged in projects critical to the readiness of the Army.

On July 18, 1995, a 1-year extension was granted for a Supervisory General Engineer, GS-801-15, with the Department of the Air Force, to direct a major foreign military sales program to the Saudi Arabian Government.

On July 25, 1995, a 1-year extension was granted for 5 Geologists with the Department of the Interior, Geological Survey, to complete specific geologic projects.

On August 23, 1995, an extension was granted for a Financial Management Specialist, GG-1160-14, at the Resolution Trust Corporation in Washington, DC, to complete work until December 31, 1995, the agency's sunset date.

On August 23, 1995, an extension was granted for up to 3 years and 3 months for 3 Clerk-Typists, GS-322-4 at the Defense Mapping Agency in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who are providing clerical support during consolidation of the agency's printing and distribution function and subsequent move to St. Louis, Missouri.

On September 18, 1995, an extension was granted for up to 2 years for 16 employees at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, to complete the B-1B Deferred Logistics Acquisition Program. The project experienced contract and funding delays.

On October 10, 1995, a 1-year extension was granted for 7 Seminar Instructors, GS-301-14, with the Department of the Navy, Naval Education and Training Program, Pensacola, Florida, engaged in the Total Quality Leadership program.

On October 26, 1995, a 4-year extension was granted for 14 employees with the Smithsonian Institution, Office of Repatriation at the National Museum of Natural History, involved in identifying Native American skeletal remains and returning them to appropriate tribes.

On December 4, 1995, a 2-year extension was granted for a Museum Technician, GS-1016-7, with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, to complete an electronic database on the photograph collection of the National Anthropological Archives.

On December 5, 1995, a 6 1/2-month extension was granted for an Astrophysicist, GS-1330-14, with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts, to complete analysis and cataloging projects associated with the SOHO satellite.

On December 6, 1995, a 3-year extension was granted for a Statistician, GS-1530-5, with the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census, to monitor the status and develop analyses of human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in developing countries.

On December 27, 1995, a 1-year extension was granted for a Senior Program Analyst, GS-345-15, with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington DC, to direct the resolution of audits and perform closeouts of Resolution Trust Corporation contracts.

On February 5, 1996, a 6-month extension was granted for 19 employees, Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanics, with a duty location at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. These employees serve as support personnel to major Air Force and Army special programs.

On March 22, 1996, a 1-year extension was granted for an employee serving as Director, Software Management Branch, an Executive Level I position, at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), in Washington, DC. This employee's services are needed to insure that Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) programs be successfully integrated into FDIC's business environment.

On March 22, 1996, a 9 1/2-month extension was granted for an Associate Director for Equal Employment Opportunity, an Executive Level I position, at FDIC, Washington DC, to assist with the FDIC/RTC transition.

On March 25, 1996, a 1-year extension was granted for a Geophysicist, GS-1313-13, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey's Earthquake Hazards Team, Pasadena, California, to complete a particular phase of the project.

On March 25, 1996, a 2 1/2-year extension was granted for a Program Assistant, GS-303-7, with the Department of Veterans Affairs' Maryland Health Care System, Perry Point, Maryland. This employee is assisting in the completion of a digitalis study involving congestive heart failure.

On April 16, 1996, a 90-day extension was granted to an employee of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, DC, who served as Chief, Closeout Services Section, an Executive Level I position. The extension permits the employee to complete closing out former Resolution Trust Corporation field leases.

On April 17, 1996, a 2-year extension was granted for a Total Quality Leadership Instructor, GS-1712-13, with the Department of the Navy, Pensacola, Florida, to provide Total Quality Leadership training to military and civilian personnel under the agency's Total Quality Leadership initiative.

On April 26, 1996, a 4-year extension was granted for four Museum Technicians, GS-1016-5, with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, to complete a project that involves the relocation of large numbers of scientific collections from two museums to the agency's Museum Support Center.

On April 26, 1996, a 1-year extension was granted for an Architect, GS-808-11, with the Department of the Interior who is assigned to the joint National Park Service/Federal Highway Administration Cumberland Gap Tunnel Project in Claiborne, Tennessee, to oversee the restoration and protection of the Cumberland Gap Wilderness Trail during construction of a highway.

On May 10, 1996, a 2-year extension was granted for a Construction Manager Engineer, GM-801-14, with the United States Information Agency's International Broadcasting Bureau in Greece. The employee manages critical contracts requiring installation of sophisticated high power transmitters at two Radio Relay Stations.

On May 15, 1996, extensions were granted ranging from 90 days to 1 1/2 years for three employees in Accountant and Auditor positions at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Dallas and Chicago, to complete work associated with the closeout of former Resolution Trust Corporation business.

On May 30, 1996, extensions for up to 4 years were granted to two Department of Veterans Affairs Computer Assistants, GS-335-6, in Perry Point, Maryland, and one Program Assistant in Temple, Texas. These employees provide data management and administrative support to medical research projects.

On May 31, 1996, a 4-month extension was granted for a Geologist, GS-1350-9, with the Department of the Interior, Geological Survey, to provide scientific support to a wetland study.

On June 12, 1996, extensions were granted for up to 9 months for seven Training Instructors/Specialists, GS-1712-9/12 with the Department of the Army. These employees support the U.S. Army Armor School's Foreign Military Sales Program that provides armor training to foreign military students.

On June 14, 1996, a 7-month extension was granted for a Park Ranger, GS-025-12, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to oversee the completion of exhibit and audio visual contracts associated with the construction of the Walnut Creek National Wildlife and Prairie Learning Center in Iowa.

On June 17, 1996, a 30-day extension was granted for a Criminal Investigator, GG-1811-12, with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, DC, to assist with a specific criminal case.

On June 20, 1996, a second extension was granted, for 4 months, to permit a Geologist, GS-1350-11, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, in Los Angeles, California, to complete an earthquake project.

On June 26, 1996, a 2-year extension was granted for two Department of the Air Force Construction Inspectors, GS-809-8, at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, to complete the last phases of a housing renovation project.

On July 12, 1996, a 2-year extension was granted to an employee of the Department of Labor, International Labor Affairs Bureau, who participates in the design and implementation of technical and economic assistance activities in central and eastern European countries. The extension permits the agency to complete its obligation and commitment to its European clients.

On July 12, 1996, a 6-month extension was granted for a Security Transactions Specialist, GG-1160-14, with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to finalize details of a major tax exempt joint venture transaction.

On July 16, 1996, a 90-day extension was granted for a Reality Specialist, GG-1170-13, with the Leasing and Insurance Unit of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to complete a project with the administration, extension and closeout of former Resolution Trust Corporation leases.

On July 22, 1996, a 1-month extension was granted for a Manpower Development Advisor, GS-0142-13, with the Department of the Interior who is assigned to the Agency for International Development's Bureau for Africa to complete certain studies he has been managing over the past year.

On August 12, 1996, a 1-year extension was granted for a Geologist, GS-1350-9, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, California, to complete mapping of Mauna Loa and Kilauea Volcanoes and provide the data in a Geographic Information System format.

On August 13, 1996, a 1-year extension was granted for an Outdoor Recreation Planner, GS-023-11, with the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to complete cooperative agreements involved with the selection and design of the American Battlefield Protection Program.

On August 16, 1996, a 2-year extension was granted for a Geologist, GS-1350-11, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Vermont, to complete a cooperative mapping program with the State of Vermont that will result in a bedrock geologic map necessary for statewide and local use.

On August 29, 1996, a 1-year extension was granted for a Geologist, GS-1350-11, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, to provide operational and technical support involving habitat mapping projects for the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and Puerto Rico.

On September 27, 1996, a 2-year extension was granted for an International Relations Officer, GS-0131-13, of the Department of Labor, International Labor Affairs Bureau. This employee will continue serving as African Area Advisor to South Africa and as Asian Area Advisor on the Human Relations Committee, Asian Pacific Economic Coordination.

On September 27, 1996, a 1-year extension was granted for a Secretary (OA), GS-318-06, with the Department of the Interior, working for the Project Coordinator of the White House Comprehensive Design Plan. This project is scheduled to be completed at the end of November 1997.

On October 21, 1996, a 1-year extension was granted for a Management Analyst, GS-0501-13, with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, in the Office of the Inspector General. The employee will continue to assist the Department of Justice, Fraud Section, with its special investigation.

On November 6, 1996, a 6-month extension was granted for a Physical Scientist, GS-1301-9, and an Electronics Engineer, GS-855-11, with the Department of the Interior, enabling these employees to complete their research work in support of the Florida Wetlands Project.

On December 11, 1996, a 2-year extension was granted for a Total Quality Management Implementation Specialist, GS-301-14, working with the Department of the Navy. This extension will facilitate the completion of the Total Quality Leadership Training Program as planned.

On December 17, 1996, a 7-month extension was granted to the Department of the Interior for a Landscape Historian, GS-170-12, enabling the employee to complete research essential to the approval nominations of six additional National Historic Landmark sites.

On January 7, 1997, an extension was granted until December 19, 1997, for a Personnel Clerk (Typing), GG-203-5, with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, DC, to provide continued and uninterrupted support to the Personnel Services Branch in order to meet increased workload levels.

On January 15, 1997, a second 1-year extension was granted for three Total Quality Management Implementation Specialists, GS-301-14, with the Department of the Navy in Pensacola, Florida, to implement a Total Quality Leadership Program throughout Navy.

On January 15, 1997, a 13-month extension was granted for a Biological Science Laboratory Technician, GS-404-9, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This permits the employee to complete work on a Medical Research Merit Review Program.

On January 16, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for an Archeologist, GS-193-12, with the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, to complete work on the National Register of Historic Places Program.

On January 28, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for a Geophysicist, GS-1313-12, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, to permit the employee to complete the conversion of automatic seismic data collection in the Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory.

On January 31, 1997, an extension was granted until December 31, 1997, for a Supervisory Contract Review Specialist, GG-1102-15, at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, DC, to complete audit and contract closeouts of Resolution Trust Corporation contracts.

On January 31, 1997, a 3-year extension was granted for a Secretary (OA), GS-318-5, with the Department of Labor, Bureau of International Labor Affairs. The employee is needed to provide administrative support to the Central and East European Technical Assistance Program so that the Bureau can meet its obligation to provide adequate service to its European clients.

On February 13, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for a Research Chemist, GS-1320-13, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, to provide scientific support for the New York, New Jersey Metro Project for predicting coastal erosion and sand extraction.

On February 19, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for an International Economist, GS-110-14, with the Department of Labor, Bureau of International Affairs, who is an Education Economist and provides education sector research and technical support to Africa.

On February 26, 1997, a 2 1/2-year extension was granted for a Biological Science Laboratory Technician, GS-404-7, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to complete work on the Merit Review research project associated with human hypertension.
On March 28, 1997, a 6-month extension was granted to a Biological Science Laboratory Technician, GS-404-5, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bath, New York, to support special toxicological and microbiological studies relevant to VA's medical and benefits entitlements.

On April 4, 1997, a 2-month extension was granted for 49 employees with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's Southeast Service Center, Atlanta, Georgia, to offset loss of permanent staff and to prepare for the Center's August 1997 closing.
On April 14, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for a Supervisory Financial Management Analyst, GG-301-12, with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Washington, DC, to implement several important and complex automation initiatives in order to improve customer service.
On April 14, 1997, a second 1-year extension was granted for two Total Quality Leadership Instructors with the Department of Navy, Pensacola, Florida, to implement a Total Quality Leadership Program throughout Navy.
On April 23, 1997, a 2-month extension was granted for 17 employees with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's Southeast Service Center, Atlanta, Georgia, to offset the loss of permanent staff and to prepare for the Center's August 1997 closing.
On April 23, 1997, a 6-month extension was granted for an Archeologist, GS-193-12, with the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Midwest Archeological Center, to permit the employee to complete the final phase of a multi-year archeological project at the Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge in North Dakota.
On April 25, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for an Outdoor Recreation Planner, GS-023-11, with the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, to complete the planning and design of backcountry and multi-modal trails for projects in Utah and Colorado.
On April 28, 1997, an 8-month extension was granted for an Archeologist, GS-193-7, with the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, to complete a multi-year parkwide archeological inventory project at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
On April 28, 1997, a 5-month extension was granted for an Archeologist, GS-193-11, with the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, to provide support for a research park project covering Yellowstone National Park, Fishlake National Forest and Salmon Challis National Forest.
On May 19, 1997, a 6-month extension was granted for 4 employees at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, DC, to complete the audit and contract closeouts of the Resolution Trust Corporation.
On June 2, 1997, a 6-month extension was granted for 2 employees with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Franklin, Massachusetts, to provide support related to the closeout of the agency's Franklin Consolidated Office.
On June 2, 1997, a 2-year extension was granted to a Deputy Construction Manager, GM-301-14, with the United States Information Agency, International Broadcasting Bureau, Sri Lanka, to complete construction of high power transmitters for the Sri Lanka Radio Relay Station.
On June 5, 1997, a 2-year extension was granted to a Museum Specialist (Zoology), GS-1016-12, with the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC. This permits the employee to continue as a research assistant for the Chairman of the Department of Vertebrate Zoology.
On June 20, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for a Secretary (OA), GS-318-6, at the Department of the Army, Military Traffic Management Command, Falls Church, Virginia, to provide support to the Worldwide Port System Project Management Office for an additonal year.
On June 20, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted to 2 Pharmacists, GS-660-12, with the Department of the Army, at the Pharmacoeconomic Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to provide uninterrupted support for work associated with drug regimens for specific diseases and drug categories.
On June 23, 1997, a 3 1/2-month extension was granted to a Writer-Editor, GS-1082-12, with the United States Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, to provide editing and publishing services for several publications and trade reports on Latin America and the Caribbean.
On June 24, 1997, extensions for up to 1 year were granted to 15 employees with the Department of the Army, U.S. Army Forces Command, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, to provide fire protection and prevention services and building and grounds maintenance until Fort Sheridan is turned over to the local community.
On July 28, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for a Wildlife Biologist, GS-401-12, with the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Chesapeake/ Allegheny Support Office, Northeast Region, to complete several critical conservation projects.
On August 5, 1997, a 3 1/2-month extension was granted for a Benefits Assistant, GG-303-7, with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Division of Administration, Personnel Services Branch, Washington, DC, to continue to assist in the conversion of the agency's health benefits program to the Federal Employees Health Benefits program.
On August 20, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for a Geophysicist, GS-1313-13, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey's Geologic Division, Eastern Regional Geologist's Office, to complete work on the software systems that support several scientific projects.
On August 20, 1997, a 2-year extension was granted for a Training Instructor, GS-1712-11, and an Administrative Support Assistant, GS-303-5, with the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort McClellan, Alabama, to provide uninterrupted assistance with critical training programs.
On August 27, 1997, a 21-month extension was granted for 3 employees with the Defense Logistics Agency field office, Defense Personnel Support Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to provide services until the Center's relocation to the Naval Inventory Control Point.
On August 28, 1997, a 13-month extension was granted for an International Trade Specialist, GS-1140-12, with the Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, to maintain program continuity and avoid disruption of support for the Business Information Service for the Newly Independent States (BISNIS), a program funded by the Agency for International Development.
On September 12, 1997, an additional 1-year extension was granted for an Assistant Director, in the Acquisition Services Branch, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, to complete work associated with the closeout of Resolution Trust Corporation contracts.
On September 18, 1997, a 6-month extension was granted for a Support Services Clerk, GS-303-5, with the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, to assist with the increased workload resulting from office consolidation affecting the Greensboro District Office, North Carolina.
On October 1, 1997, an additional 1-year extension was granted to a previous 3-month extension for a Writer-Editor, GS-1082-12, with the Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration. As part of an interagency agreement with the Agency for International Development, this extension will permit the employee to electronically publish the Latin American/Caribbean Business Bulletin.
On November 3, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for a Medical Officer, GS-602-14, with the Department of the Army, Fort Carson, Colorado, to alleviate a shortage of medical care at the Evans Army Community Hospital.
On November 13, 1997, a 3-month extension was granted for a Geologist, GS-1350-12, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, to complete a mineral resources project.
On December 15, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for an Archeologist, GS-193-11, with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to complete work on several archeological projects.
On December 17, 1997, a 1-year extension was granted for a Secretary, GS-318-6, with the Department of the Army, Military Traffic Management Command, to provide continued support in the Integrated Booking System Project Management Office.
On December 17, 1997, a 2-year extension was granted for an Ecologist, GS-408-9. with the Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, to permit the employee to continue work on the Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem Initiative.
