Introduction
The NLM Gateway is a Web-based system that lets users search
simultaneously in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National
Library of Medicine (NLM). It allows users of NLM services to
initiate searches from one Web interface, providing "one-stop searching"
for many of NLM's information resources or databases. It is being
developed by the Lister Hill
National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC) at the
National Library of Medicine (NLM),
a part of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH).
One target audience for the Gateway is the Internet user who is new
to NLM's online resources and does not know what information is available
there or how best to search for it. This audience may include physicians
and other health care providers, researchers, librarians, students, and
increasingly, patients, their families, and the public. Other users may
find the Gateway useful for an overall search of NLM's information
resources. Some searchers may locate what they need immediately, while
others will utilize the Gateway as an adjunct tool to other NLM search
services such as PubMed® and MedlinePlus®.
System and Data Coverage
The Gateway connects users with multiple NLM retrieval systems
and also provides a search interface for its own collections.
These collections include various types of information that do not
logically belong in PubMed, LocatorPlus/NLM Catalog, or other established
NLM retrieval systems (e.g., meeting abstracts). Please note,
other NLM systems (e.g., PubMed, LocatorPlus/NLM Catalog, MedlinePlus) will
retain their own search interfaces and will continue to be publicly
available.
The Gateway will provide access to the information found in an
increasing number of NLM retrieval systems in several phases. Currently,
users are able to access information from the collections in the table
below. The Meeting Abstracts collection is found only in the Gateway.

MEDLINE®
(Medical Literature, Analysis, and Retrieval System Online) is the U.S.
National Library of Medicine's (NLM) premier bibliographic database that contains
over 12 million references to journal articles in life sciences with a
concentration on biomedicine.
TOXLINE
is the National Library of Medicine's extensive collection of
online bibliographic information covering the biochemical,
pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and
other chemicals. TOXNET Special complements TOXLINE Core (part of MEDLINE)
with references from an assortment of specialized journals and other
sources.
NLM Catalog
The NLM Catalog is an alternative search interface to NLM bibliographic
records for journals, books, audiovisuals, computer software, electronic
resources, and other materials that is available to users under the NCBI
Entrez system. Updated every weekday, the NLM Catalog provides links to
the library's holdings in LocatorPlus.
LocatorPlus is the web-based online public access catalog component of
the Voyager integrated library system used at NLM. It is updated
continuously and includes up-to-the minute information on NLMs
holdings, orders, and an items circulation status. It incorporates
authority headings and cross-reference structures for names and titles.
LocatorPlus is the web-based online public access catalog component of
the Voyager integrated library system used at NLM. It includes over
800,000 catalog records for books, audiovisuals, journals, computer
files, and other materials in the Library's collections.
It is updated continuously and includes up-to-the minute information on NLMs
holdings, orders, and an items circulation status. It incorporates
authority headings and cross-reference structures for names and titles.
MedlinePlus
is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's web site for consumer
health information. MedlinePlus includes:
- over 650 health topics with links to health information from NIH
and other sources and also include a MEDLINE® search, current news items
about the topic, and links to related topics
- a medical encyclopedia containing an extensive library of medical
images as well as 4,000 articles about diseases, tests, symptoms, injuries
and surgeries
- interactive health tutorials that use animated graphics and sound
to explain conditions and procedures in easy-to-read language
- drug information for generic and brand name drugs
- current health news with late-breaking stories about medicine and health
ClinicalTrials.gov provides patients, family members and members
of the public current information about clinical research studies.
It is a registry of clinical trials for both federally and privately funded
trials "of experimental treatments for serious or life-threatening
diseases or conditions."
DIRLINE
(Directory of Information Resources Online) is the U.S. National
Library of Medicine's online database containing location and descriptive
information about a wide variety of information resources including
organizations, research resources, projects, and databases concerned
with health and biomedicine.
Genetics Home Reference is the National Library of Medicine's Web
site for consumer information about genetic conditions and the genes
responsible for those conditions. Information includes Genetic Condition
Summaries, Gene Summaries, a Help Me Understand Genetics document, and a
searchable Glossary.
Meeting Abstracts contains meeting
abstracts from the former AIDSLINE, HealthSTAR, and SPACELINE databases.
It also includes new meeting abstracts on AIDS/HIV, and meeting abstracts
from AcademyHealth (formerly the Association for Health Services Research
and Health Policy), the International Society of Technology Assessment
in Health Care, and the Cochrane Colloquium annual conferences.
HSRProj
provides project records for health services research, including health
technology assessment and the development and use of clinical practice guidelines.
OMIM
(Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man) is a catalog of human
genes and genetic disorders, with links to literature references,
sequence records, maps, and related databases. It is based on the book,
Mendelian Inheritance in Man.
HSDB
is a toxicology data file focused on the toxicology of potentially
hazardous chemicals. It is enhanced with information on human exposure,
industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate,
regulatory requirements, and related areas.
Gateway access to additional NLM retrieval systems will happen over time.
Among the resources to be added to the Gateway are the
NCBI Bookshelf.
Access to other systems will be included in future development phases.
