To Obtain Reproductions

Military Service and Family History Records

  1. Copies of National Archives microfilm publications held in many National Archives facilities are ordered through the National Archives Trust Fund.

  2. For certain popular genealogical inquiries, the research phase and the reproduction request phase are combined through use of standardized order forms submitted by the researcher:

Self-Service Copying

Self-service copying by researchers is permitted under specified conditions in most research rooms, using:
  • National Archives in-house equipment such as coin or card-operated electrostatic copiers and microfilm printers, and, less frequently, snapshot copiers, dubbing devices, and others;
  • Researchers' own equipment ranging from cameras to scanners, that has been specifically approved by the National Archives for work with the records in question.

Copies Made by NARA

Ordering reproductions from the National Archives may involve
  • Paper copies of paper records
  • Paper copies from microfilmed records
  • Microfilm copies of paper records
  • Microfilm copies of microfilm rolls
  • Myriad versions of audiovisual and electronic records
Reproduction requests ordinarily include item-level citations, previously determined by researchers through:
  • On-site research
  • Inquiries to National Archives reference staff (limited searches only)

The copying is done by National Archives staff, or by private contractors/vendors.

All Other Reproductions

Follow the procedures of the NARA facility that holds the records to be copied. (Note exceptions: certain records are ordered through standardized forms)

    existing microfilm rolls, including census, held at the National Archives Building, Washington, DC, the National Archives at College Park, MD, and many Regional Records Service Facilities. Ordered through National Archives Trust Fund.

  • Census, Passenger Arrival, and Military Service Records:

    These are individual and family files frequently used in genealogical research, and are held at the National Archives Building, Washington, DC and, for census, also in the Regional Archives. They can be ordered through standardized forms.

    Online ordering is now also available to order copies of:
    • Federal military pension applications files for military service from the American Revolution up to before World War I.
    • Individual pages of Federal population census schedules, 1790-1930.
    • Land entry files (such as credit, cash, homestead, and mineral) or surrendered military bounty-land warrants files (Acts of 1788, 1812, 1847, 1850, and 1855).
    • Bounty-land warrant application files for Federal military service before 1856.

  • Textual Records (National Archives Building, Washington, DC and National Archives at College Park, MD):

    paper records of all varieties, including published materials, with other media occasionally interspersed.

  • Motion Picture, Sound, and Video Records (National Archives at College Park, MD):

    films, videos, and sound recordings.

  • Cartographic Records (National Archives at College Park, MD):

    maps, architectural drawings, and aerial photographs.

  • Still Picture Records (National Archives at College Park, MD):

    photographs -- mostly non-aerial -- and posters.

  • Electronic Records (National Archives at College Park, MD):

    electronic files and associated documentation.

  • Regional Records Services Facilities Records:

    paper records, maps and architectural drawings, photographs.

  • Presidential Libraries Materials:

    all media.

Restrictions

Reproduction activity may be subject to limitations arising from preservation priorities, copyright and donor restriction concerns, and other factors.

Fees

Fees are charged for reproduction of archival records. Our current fee schedule is incorporated in 36 CFR 1258.
