RSV Season Upon Us

With all the talk about the flu vaccine shortage in this country, most people are aware that we are now entering into the “cold and flu season.” Besides influenza, there is another viral infection that is of concern this time of year – respiratory syncytial virus or RSV. Of particular concern for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, RSV can cause pneumonia and croup that can become life-threatening to those in these high-risk groups. Testing is done when a patient, such as an infant or elderly person, presents with symptoms of RSV and may be ordered along with an influenza test when both are known to be in the community.
