Forest Stewardship FAQ
Why does the Federal government pay landowners for these
activities?
Incentives help landowners manage forests in ways that benefit the
environment, the economy, and society. Private citizens own more
than 92 percent of the forests in the northeastern United States.
Roughly half of Americans live in this region and benefit from the
clean water, wildlife, scenic beauty, and wood products that landowners
provide. Federal money is often, but not always, available to offset
the cost of stewardship planning and implementation.
Who is eligible?
All nonindustrial, private woodland owners are eligible; however,
if the property is less than 10 acres or more than 1,000 acres,
a special waiver is required. The practices must be maintained for
at least 10 years. The program is entirely voluntary.
Who administers the program in my area?
The USDA Forest Service, Northeastern Area, State and Private Forestry
branch administers the program with the states. Interested landowners
should contact their State Forest
Stewardship coordinator.
