Living Donation

In addition to deceased donor transplants, patients may also receive organs from living donors. Living donation offers an alternative for individuals awaiting transplantation from a deceased donor and increases the existing organ supply.

2004 US Kidney Transplants by Donor Type

To date*, there have been 311,422 transplants for all organs in the United States. Approximately 20% of these are living donation. In 2003, however, approximately 43% of kidney transplants came from living donors.

Currently, there are thousands more people waiting for a lifesaving transplant than there are organs being donated.
