Bush Closes G8 Summit Emphasizing Common Goals For Iraq, Mideast
Says he's confident partners and allies will help Iraq as it reconstructs

President Bush does not expect additional NATO troops to be sent to Iraq, but he is confident global partners and allies will help that country in a variety of ways as it reconstructs and moves toward democracy.

"The nations of the G8 are united in our desire to help bring stability and democracy to Iraq," Bush said at a June 10 news conference marking the end of a three-day summit of Group of Eight (G8) leaders. Bush told reporters he was pleased with the level of unity expressed on a future course for Iraq and that the subject of NATO troops did not present a problem. (complete text)



G8 Pledges to Pay for Peace Support Training
Action plan aimed especially at resolving violent conflicts in Africa

G8 leaders have pledged to pay for and organize training for about 75,000 troops worldwide by 2010 and to equip some of them to improve rapid deployment of peace support operations where they are needed, especially those led by the United Nations in sub-Saharan Africa.

That initiative was part of a G8 action plan for assisting peace support operations that also includes training for gendarmes, or "heavy police," to control crowds, prisons and borders. (complete text)

G8 Leaders Call for Global Consortium to Develop HIV Vaccine
U.S. will host organizational meeting later this year

Leaders from the Group of Eight (G8) industrialized countries have called for the creation of a Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise -- a consortium of government and private sector groups -- in order to enhance coordination of research efforts aimed at finding a vaccine for HIV/AIDS.

In a June 10 statement from the G8 Summit in Sea Island, Georgia, the leaders declared that the enterprise should develop a strategic plan for prioritizing the challenges to be addressed, coordinating research and product development, and sharing information and technologies. (complete text)

G8 Leaders Agree to Expand Efforts to Fight Famine
Africa to receive special focus, White House says

G8 leaders have agreed to expand efforts to fight famine, hunger and food insecurity, particularly in Africa, according to a White House statement.

The agreement was reached June 10, the last day of the G8 summit at Sea Island, Georgia. Leaders pledged specifically to work with other donors to support government reforms, rural infrastructure improvements and market development that would break the cycle of famine in Ethiopia and other countries in the Horn of Africa, the statement said.
