EPA to receive $62 million for past Superfund cleanup
costs in Montana's Clark Fork River Basin
9/5- EPA and the Department of Justice announced an agreement with the Atlantic
Richfield Company (ARCO) under which the company will reimburse EPA $50 million
for cleanup work conducted in the Clark Fork River Basin. The US Judgement Fund
will provide EPA with an additional $12 million to cover federal liabilities in
the basin. The areas covered under this consent decree are the Anaconda Smelter
Site, the Clark Fork River Operable Unit of the Clark Fork River/Milltown Reservoir
Sediments Site, and the Warm Springs Ponds and Butte Priority Soils Operable Units
of the Silver Bow Creek/Butte Area Site. This settlement will speed cleanups in
the Clark Fork River Basin. For more information, visit the Clark

Presentation proposals for Community Involvement and
Training Conference due December 17
EPA’s 2005 Community Involvement and Training
Conference will be held July 12 - 15, 2005 in Buffalo, New York. EPA is soliciting
presentation proposals until December 17, 2004.
Environmental Education grant proposals due November
15
9/20 - Region 8's Environmental Education program is requesting proposals for
environmental education projects. Eligible applicants include state, local or
tribal education agencies, environmental agencies, colleges or universities, not-for-profit
organizations or noncommercial educational broadcasting entities. Applications
must be postmarked by Monday, November 15, 2004. For more information, visit the

Hybrid vehicle joins Region 8's fleet
8/29 --Region 8 celebrated the addition of a hybrid Honda Civic today to
its fleet of cars. The vehicle is the first of many hybrid cars EPA's Denver office
will be purchasing to complement its existing fleet of standard and alternative
fueled vehicles. The electric/gas powered Civic will get nearly 50 mpg in both
city and highway driving conditions. It will emit 22 percent less smog forming
pollutants and 50 percent less greenhouse gases than the vehicle it replaces.
