PROTECTING YOUR HOME FROM FLOOD

Flooding is the number one natural hazard affecting the U.S. It occurs in all fifty states and in areas of low-, medium-, and high-risk flood zones. Unfortunately, flood damage is not covered by your homeowner's insurance. And it's probably something you won't think about until after you need it— but it can help protect you, your family and your property in case of natural disaster.

Get the facts on this insurance and how it can help you with the National Flood Insurance Guide from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Learn how you can participate in the National Flood Insurance Program, easy steps you can take to protect your property, and tips for you and your community to become flood alert.

You can't predict where or when a flood will hit. They often accompany other natural disasters, but they can also be the result of construction run-off. Flood insurance can cost as little as a dollar a day, depending on where you live and the coverage you choose. It covers your home, its contents, permanently installed fixtures, such as dishwashers, and garages, whether attached or detached.

There are some simple steps that you can take now to protect your home and property. If you live in a flood-prone area, move valuables from the basement. Clean and maintain storm drains and gutters to allow flood water to flow freely. Store important documents where they will not be damaged. Keep an emergency kit in your car that includes water, first-aid kit, a flashlight, batteries, warm blankets, a shovel, a battery-operated radio and a way to signal for help.
