ANESA REGIONAL INFORMATION
- AFRICA: Activities focus on human resource development and
capacity building in research and education. Participation of junior
investigators from both the United States and the host country is strongly
encouraged. Topics that benefit from the region's unique biological,
environmental, geological, anthropological, and cultural resources are
of special interest. Proposals may combine research and education into
one project, such as the REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates)
Site on Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania, coordinated through the International
Decade for the East African Lakes (IDEAL). Information on this activity
is available at http://www.geo.arizona.edu/nyanza.
Other areas of regional interest include materials research, global
climate change, natural resources management, and the International
Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER) Program. Information on the LTER/ILTER
network is available at http://www.lternet.edu.
NSF contact is Elizabeth Lyons.
- NEAR EAST: Although ANESA supports collaborations with all
countries of the Near East, the largest number are with Turkey and Egypt.
In Turkey, the national science funding organization, TUBITAK,
reviews and funds the collaborations. With Egypt, ANESA operates a special
program under the US-Egypt
Joint Science and Technology Program with funds from the Department
of State. This program is overseen by a Joint Board which meets annually
to set priorities and select proposals for awards. Throughout the region,
the ANESA program promotes inclusion of junior researchers in collaborations
to stimulate long-term research partnerships. NSF contact is Osman
Shinaishin.
- SOUTH ASIA: Within this region, research collaborations with
India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have developed in important scientific
areas. In addition to the activities supported under the US-India Cooperative Science Program, a joint program with
India's Department of Science and Technology supports collaborative
research projects and workshops. The US-India
Science and Technology Forum is an intergovernmental program that
supports collaboration through interaction among government, academic,
and industrial institutions. Research collaborations with Pakistan and
Bangladesh have increased in recent years with the support of the respective
ministries of science and technology in those countries. NSF contact
for India and Nepal is Marjorie Lueck.
