American Indians are the least represented of all minorities in
Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (SMET). The overall
goal of this alliance is to establish a comprehensive interactive
network to substantially increase the number of American Indians
receiving baccalaureate and graduate degrees in SMET fields. The
foundation of this alliance is 25 participating Tribal Colleges
located in the following nine (9) states: Kansas, Michigan,
Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington
and Wisconsin.

The Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy (COSEPUP)
report, Reshaping the Graduate Education of Scientists and Engineers,
recommended that better information and guidance be provided to
upper-division undergraduate and graduate science and engineering
students and post-docs so these individuals could improve their
decision-making relative to their career and education. To respond to
this need, the National Research Council (NRC) Policy Division (PD)
and Office of Scientific and Engineering Personnel (OSEP) has
developed this "one-stop shopping" location for guidance and
information titled A Career Planning Center for Beginning
Scientists and Engineers (CPC). This center builds on existing
activities of scientific and engineering disciplinary societies.

The Committee on Women in Science and Engineering (CWSE) of the
National Research Council serves as a national focus to advocate
action for increasing the participation of women in the science and
engineering workforce. CWSE also acts as an informational resource to

The Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) was founded
in 1974 for the purpose of increasing the number of Mexican Americans and other
Hispanics in the technical and scientific fields. Originally, the focus was
on the professions, but as the organization grew, so did the scope of its activities
and interests. The Society now represents the Mexican American community in
the all-important technological arena on issues related to education, economics,
environment and research. As a mature organization with a national membership
representing all the engineering and scientific disciplines, the society now
has turned its focus on the youth of our people. Many of its programs, with
the financial help of members, companies and government agencies, are now directed
at increasing the number of students at all grade levels who will study and
prepare to enter our technical professions.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles,
California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the City of Los Angeles.
Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers
to serve as role models in the Hispanic community.
The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly
established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass
the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE
enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters
throughout the nation.

of EDC/Center for Children & Technology and is funded by the National Science
Foundation, Directorate of Education and Human Resources, HRD #9450042. Telementoring
is a three year project that draws on the strengths of telecommunications technology
to build on-line communities of support among female high school students, professional
women in technical fields, parents, and teachers.
