Oceanographic Instrumentation Program Description The principal function of the Oceanographic Instrumentation Program is to provide support for acquisition of oceanographic instrumentation for shared use aboard research vessels that are used by NSF-funded scientists. In most cases, proposals are submitted by institutions that operate research ships in the UNOLS fleet (see http://www.unols.org). Examples of shared use instrumentation include CTDs, rosettes, corers, sonar systems of several varieties, and shipboard computers. The Division of Ocean Sciences does not have a separate program for acquisition of laboratory instrumentation; most requests of this nature are appropriately considered by one or more of the research programs in the Ocean Section or the Marine Geosciences Section. Proposals for development of new instruments may be submitted to the Oceanographic Technology and Interdisciplinary Coordination Program (OTIC). Questions regarding which program is most appropriate may be directed to the Program Director listed below.  In addition to seagoing shared-use instrumentation, the Oceanographic Instrumentation program also supports the National
Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (NOSAMS) facility
at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The facility was established to provide radiocarbon dating services for the oceanographic research community and to provide research into new isotopic dating methods. Scheduling and use of the facility are controlled by the facility director, and user fees are charged.
