USGS 01600000 NORTH BRANCH POTOMAC RIVER AT PINTO, MD

STATION.--01600000 NORTH BRANCH POTOMAC RIVER AT PINTO, MD
LOCATION.--Lat 39°34'00.5", long 78°50'22.4", Mineral County, W. Va., Hydrologic Unit 02070002,
   on right bank at downstream side of Western Maryland Railway bridge at Pinto, 2.8 mi downstream 
   from Mill Run, and at mile 32.6.
DRAINAGE AREA.--598 mi2.
PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1938 to current year.
REVISED RECORDS.--OFR 95-0292: Drainage area.
GAGE.--Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 648.23 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929.
   Prior to Dec. 10, 1938, nonrecording gage at highway bridge 250 ft downstream at same datum.
   Since Oct. 1, 1985, operated as a crest-stage partial-record station.
REMARKS.--Some regulation at low flow by Stony River Reservoir, 66 mi upstream from station prior to
   July 1981. Low-flow regulation since December 1950 by Savage River Reservoir, 25 mi upstream
   from station. Flow regulated by Jennings Randolph Lake, 29 mi upstream from station since July 1981.
   U.S. Army Corps of Engineers satellite collection platform at station.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD.--Maximum discharge, 37,000 ft3/s, Oct. 16, 1954,
   gage height, 23.23 ft; minimum discharge, 31 ft3/s, Dec. 18, 19, 1943, result of freezeup.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--Flood of Mar. 29, 1924, reached a stage  of about 24 ft, discharge,
   about 55,000 ft3/s. Flood of  Mar. 17, 1936, reached a stage of about 23.5 ft, from floodmarks, 
   discharge, about 50,000 ft3/s.  
COOPERATION.--Funding for the operation of this station is provided  by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
   and the U.S. Geological Survey.
