USGS 05407000 WISCONSIN RIVER AT MUSCODA, WI

  LOCATION
 

LOCATION.--Lat 43°11'53", long 90°26'36", in NW 1/4 sec.1, T.8 N., R.1 W., Grant County, Hydrologic 

Unit 07070005, on left bank at bridge on State Highway 80, 0.5 mi upstream from Eagle Mill Creek and 

1.0 mi north of  Muscoda.

 

DRAINAGE AREA.--10,400 square miles.

 

PERIOD OF RECORD.--December 1902 to December 1903, gage height and discharge measurements 

only, October 1913 to current year.  Monthly discharge for October and November 1913 published in 

WSP 1308 Gage-height records collected at same site November 1908 to December 1912 are contained in 

reports of U. S. Weather Bureau.

 

REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 785:  1921(M).  WSP 875:  1921.  WSP 1308:  1915(M),  1917-18(M), 

1920-21(M), 1924(M).  WDR WI-79-1:  Drainage area.

 

GAGE.--Water-stage recorder.  Datum of gage is 666.77 ft above sea level. Prior to Nov. 22, 1929, 

nonrecording gage on bridge 200 ft upstream at same datum.  Nov. 22, 1929, to Mar. 15, 1930, 

nonrecording gage at present site and datum.

 

REMARKS.--Flow regulated by 24 reservoirs and many powerplants upstream from station.  In 1938 

when the maximum of record occurred, there were 21 reservoirs upstream from station, the two large 

reservoirs, Petenwell and Castle Rock were not yet in existence.  Usually flows less than 20 ft3/s were 

diverted out of the basin through Portage Canal to the Fox River throughout the year. Gage-height 

telemeter and data-collection platform at station.

 

Station operated in cooperation with Corps of Engineers, St. Paul, Minnesota.
