Annual Banquet 2001

Joint Meeting of the DC and FDA Chapters of Sigma XI


The 2001 Annual Banquet will be held on May 4 at the U.S. National Arboretum. This will be a joint meeting with the DC Chapter of Sigma Xi. Members are welcome to arrive early to tour the azalea gardens, however, refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served at 6:30 pm in the courtyard between the Administration Building and the Bonzai Museum. After refreshments, there will be dinner, induction of new members, awards for student science fair winners, and a presentation by Robin L. B. Sellinger:

How Things Bend and Break: Materials Science at the Molecular Scale

Robin L. B. Selinger received her bachelors and Ph.D. degrees in physics at Harvard University. After postdoctoral work at the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Maryland and NIST, she joined the physics faculty of Catholic University in Washington, DC. Her research involves applications of statistical physics in computational materials science (fracture, plasticity) and in chemical physics (complex fluids) with a strong emphasis on computer simulation. Her work is funded by the Navy and by the National Science Foundation. Her honors include: the National Science Foundation Career Award, National Research Council Postdoctoral fellowship, the Harvard University Physics Department Robbins Prize, and a Zonta International Amelia Earhart fellowship. Dr. Selinger is a member of the American Physical Society and the Materials Research Society.

Dinner will consist of a choice between Prime Rib Au Jus or Chicken Breast stuffed with cheese, asparagus and carrots in a butter wine sauce. The entree will be served with a seasonal vegetable and twice baked potato. Dessert will be a sweet ravioli puff topped with strawberry currant sauce. Dinner will be served buffet style. Catering provided by Olde South Catering, Deale, Maryland. Chef / Owner Sorrell has promised us a delicious feast.

Directions: The U.S. National Arboretum is located in northeast Washington, DC, 2.2 miles from the Capitol. It is bordered on the west by Bladensburg Road, on the north by New York Avenue, and on the south by M Street. Enter by the R Street entrance off Bladensburg Road. R Street is the 4th left, south of the intersection of New York Avenue with Bladensburg Road. Parking is available next to the Administration Bldg. [Map]
