Dr. Schanfield has an MA Anthropology, Harvard University; and a Ph.D., Human Genetics, University of Michigan. He was a Post-Doctoral Scientist in Immunology at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco.

During his 30 year career, Dr. Schanfield has held the following positions: University of California Medical Center, San Francisco; Director Transfusion Services, Reference and Immunoglobulin Allotyping Laboratories, Blood Center of Southeast Wisconsin; Assistant Director, American Red Cross Blood Services, Nat ional Headquarters, Washington, DC, Head, Immunohematology LaboDirector, Genetic Testing Institute, Atlanta, Georgia; Laboratory Director, Genetic Testing Institute, Atlanta,Georgia; Laboratory Director / President, Analytical Genetic Testing Center, Inc., Denver, CO. Laboratory Directorof the Monroe County Public Safety Laboratory, Rochester, NY, Professor and Chair, Department of Forensic Sciences, The George Washington University, Washington, DC.

Dr. Schanfield was certified as a High Complexity Laboratory Director (ABB), and, as such, has directed licensed clinical laboratories in private and public sectors involved with transfusion of blood products, and the application of genetic marker testing to the solution of civil and criminal case evidence problems including paternity testing and forensic evidence. He has directed research projects in a wide array of immune response, genetic basis of disease susceptibility, anthropological genetic studies, paternity testing and forensic sciences. His research areas include: applied genetics, forensic genetics, paternity testing, anthropological genetics, and evolutionary biology of immunoglobulin allotypes, human evolution and adaptation, and immunogenetics of the immune response. His career has included blood banking, immunological genetics, forensic testing of non-DNA and DNA cases, assisting in the identification of remains as an after math of the war in the Balkans, directed a regional crime laboratory and is now Professor and chair of forensic sciences as George Washington University.

Directions to the Log Lodge: USDA National Visitors Center

From BARC-West/College Park: Take Route 1 to Powder Mill Rd. East (alternatively take Rt. 1 to Sunnyside Ave. East, Left on Kenilworth Ave Right onto Powder Mill Rd).

From the Beltway: Exit Kenilworth Ave. North. At 4th stoplight take a right onto Powder Mill RD.

The rest: Head East on Powder Mill Rd. enter USDA farm property. Continue on this road for 1.6 Miles, the log lodge (USDA National Visitors Center) is on your right.

From the Parkway: Exit Powder Mill Rd from the Parkway and head west towards Beltsville. Go 1.3 miles the log lodge (USDA National Visitors Center) is on your left.
