October
is Lupus Awareness Month
LFA and Chapters Lead National Effort
to Increase Public Understanding of Lupus as Significant Health Issue
October is National Lupus Awareness Month,
and the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) and its
nationwide network of chapters and support groups, and other national partners, are marking the occasion
by conducting a comprehensive public information campaign
to increase understanding of lupus. LFA and its chapters
also are conducing numerous special events to educate
people about lupus, and raising funds for research,
public and profesional education, and support services.
The annual national observance for
lupus, first established by a resolution
of Congress in 1977, provides members of the public,
health professionals, and policymakers information about the chronic (incurable) disease
that affects more than 1.5 million Americans.
LFA Public Awareness
Campaign
The LFA public awareness campaign,
entitled "Someone You Know Has Lupus,"
includes posters,
public service announcements
on radio and television stations,
advertisements in newspapers and magazines,
as well as outdoor and transit signs. The messages feature
individuals describing someone they know with lupus and the
impact the disease has on their life. The campaign
is directed toward individuals most likely to be affected
by lupus, especially women of childbearing age.
Special Events and Activities
Many LFA chapters will conduct special
events featuring medical experts
who will provide updates on development in lupus research and treatment.
The LFA is conducting a ten-city Continuing Medical Education Program for physicians and other health professionals, along with a separate program for people with lupus and their families.
Lupus Now - LFA's National Magazine
The LFA is celebrating the first anniversary of its national magazine, Lupus Now,
which provides the latest, medically sound information
for consumers and health professionals. The 48-page
magazine is the only national publicaton that provides lifestyle and wellness feature
articles, the latest information about research and therapies,
clinical updates, personal stories, and more.
